Dermatitis Perioral (Boca)

Formulations designed to reduce irritation, support barrier integrity, and restore skin comfort

Dermatitis and eczema are characterized by barrier dysfunction, increased transepidermal water loss, and heightened reactivity to external triggers.
Skincare plays a direct role in either aggravating or stabilizing this condition.

Formulations in this collection are selected based on their ability to:

  • Minimize lipid disruption during cleansing
  • Reduce exposure to known irritants
  • Support stratum corneum cohesion
  • Maintain hydration without occlusive overload

Frequently asked questions

What is the best soap for chronic dermatitis and eczema?

An authentic, vegetable-based soap is essential. The By Valenti® Lavender & Almond bar soap and Authentic Castile bar soap were specifically formulated to be gentle on the skin and address chronic dermatitis. Unlike synthetic detergents or "fake" Castile soaps, they cleanse without stripping the skin’s natural oils, making it safe for daily use on reactive skin.

What is the main cause of eczema flare-ups?

Eczema flare-ups are primarily linked to barrier dysfunction combined with environmental triggers such as harsh cleansers, allergens, low humidity, and irritant exposure.

Can skincare products make eczema worse?

Yes. Products containing harsh surfactants, fragrance, or poorly balanced lipids can increase transepidermal water loss and trigger inflammation.

Is niacinamide good for eczema?

Niacinamide has been shown to improve barrier function, reduce inflammation, and decrease water loss, making it beneficial for dermatitis-prone skin.

Should I avoid soap if I have eczema?

Not all soaps are problematic. High-lather, poorly formulated soaps can worsen symptoms, but lipid-balanced soaps with appropriate fatty acid profiles like our Lavender & Almond Bar Soap or our Authentic Castile Bar Soap can cleanse without disrupting the barrier.

How often should eczema-prone skin be cleansed?

Cleansing should be limited to once daily or as needed, using low-irritation formulations that do not strip the skin.

What ingredients should I avoid with dermatitis?

  • Synthetic fragrance
  • Harsh surfactants (SLS, SLES)
  • High concentrations of exfoliating acids
  • Known personal allergens

Is eczema caused by dry skin?

Dryness is a symptom, not the root cause. The underlying issue is barrier dysfunction, which leads to increased water loss and vulnerability to irritants.

Can moisturizing alone repair eczema?

Moisturizing helps the symptoms not the cause. Effective management requires both lipid replenishment and reduction of external irritants. One of the biggest aggressor is poorly formulated and unbalanced artisanal soaps made with the cold-process method and commercial soaps. The first relies on elevated amounts coconut oil, palm oil and tallow to produce foam, based on the misconception that the more a soap foams the better it cleanses. For laundry this is acceptable, for the skin it is not. The second relies heavily on low grade ingredients and mass produced formulas with no benefit for the skin.
